Making bobbins

Pickups

Originally I set out to build bobbins out of solid pieces of wood. Well I hate routers. And the attempts I have made in the past with the router ended in disasters.

I decided to treat the wood like flatwork and build a center and glue the flatwork to it. Gel superglue with accelerator is the key. It allows me to build several bobbins in one day with no clamps.

To make the centers I used the drum sander to properly size the square stock I plan to use. Next for the pole pieces I made templates out of fiberboard. Set the fence on the drill press and use the veneer calipers to find the centers of the poles. Drill the first hole and use and index pin to hold the template. Then preceded to drill the rest of the holes.

Next up was solving the shaping of the bobbin issue. This was solved with a sled and guide pins. Using the guide pins and a sliding sled I pin the bobbin with the outside holes and make the cut on the first side. Always centered. Then flip the bobbin and do it again. Then to radius the ends remove one index pin and swing the bobbin in an arc. The disk sander is much safer and forgiving. I will post pictures later...
